加山 又造 | Matazo Kayama

1927 京都市に生まれる。祖父は狩野派の絵師、父は西陣の染色
    図案家であった。
1940 京都市美術工芸学校絵画科に進学。
1944 東京美術学校日本画科に入学。小林古径、山本丘人らに
    教えを受ける。
1951 新制作協会に参加。
1955 初個展(銀座・養清堂画廊)。
1959 横山操、石本正との三人展、轟会(銀座・村越画廊)が
    始まる。
1961 ニューヨークで個展。
1966 多摩美術大学日本画科教授となる。
    (中断を含め1988まで)
1975 渋谷西武にて新作展。
1978 東京・横浜・京都・大阪髙島屋・丸栄・神戸大丸を巡回
    する新作展。
1980 「月光波濤」で芸術選奨文部大臣賞受賞。
1982 東京セントラル美術館にて新作展。
1984 身延山久遠寺に龍の天井画を制作。
1986 有楽町西武アートフォーラムにて裸婦の新作展。
1988 東京芸術大学教授となる。(1995年まで)
    髙島屋にて屏風絵展。
1993 北京、上海で個展。
1996 ロンドン・大英博物館日本ギャラリーにて個展。
1997 京都・天龍寺に龍の天井画を制作。文化功労者となる。
1998 東京国立近代美術館にて回顧展。
2003 文化勲章を受章。
2004 4月、死去。享年76歳。

1927 Born in Kyoto. His father was a kimono designer
   who worked with the high-quality textiles produced in
   the Nishijin area of Kyoto, and his grandfather was a
   painter of the Kyoto Kano School.
1940 Entered the Department of Painting of Kyoto
   Prefectural School of Art and Crafts.
1944 Entered the Department of Japanese Paiting of Tokyo
   School of Fine Arts. Studied under the artist Kokei
   Kobayashi, Kyujin Yamamoto.
1951 Participated in the Shinseisaku Art Society.
1955 The first Solo Exhibition, Yoseido Gallery, Tokyo
1959 The art group "Todoroki-kai" was organized by the
   Gallery Murakoshi consisting of Tadashi Ishimono,
   Misao Yokoyama, and Matazo Kayama.
1961 Held a solo exhibition at the Janet Nestler Gallery
   (New York).
1966 Became a professor of Japanese painting at Tama
   Art University.
1975 Held an exhibition of his new works at the Shibuya
   Seibu department store in Tokyo.
1978 Held an exhibition of his new works at Tokyo,
   Yokohama, Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, and Kobe.
1980 The 30th Minister of Education Art Encouragement
   Prize was given to "Waves in Moonlight".
1982 Held an exhibition of his new works at Tokyo Central
   Museum.
1984 Completed the ceiling painting "Dragon" at
   Kuon-ji Temple.
1986 Held an exhibition of his new works at Seibu
   Yurakucho Art Forum, Tokyo.
1988 Became a professor at Tokyo University of the Arts.
   "Exhibition of Kayama Matazo Screens" was held at
   Takashimaya department store in Tokyo, Yokohama,
   Kyoto, and Osaka.
1993 Held a solo exhibition at the China Art Gallery in Beijing.
1996 Held a solo exhibition at Japanese galleries of
   the British Museum in London.
1997 Completed the ceiling painting "Dragon" at Tenryuji
   Temple.Became a Person of Cultural Merit.
1998 Held a retrospectibe exhibition at The National Museum
   of Modern Art,Tokyo.
2003 Presented with the Order of Culture.
2004 Died at the age of 76.
