平山 郁夫 | Ikuo Hirayama

1930(昭和 5) 年 広島県豊田郡瀬戸田町北町(生口島)に
          生まれる。
1945(昭和20)年 修道中学3年生の時、広島市内にて被爆。
1952(昭和27)年 東京美術学校(現東京藝術大学)日本画科
          を卒業。
          東京藝術大学美術学部日本画科副手に就任。
          主任教授の前田青邨に師事。
1953(昭和28)年 再興第38回日本美術院展に《家路》が初
          入選。以来、院展を中心に活動する。
1959(昭和34)年 第44回院展に《仏教伝来》が入選。
1962(昭和37)年 第1回ユネスコ・フェローシップにより
          ヨーロッパへ留学。
1964(昭和39)年 日本美術院同人に推挙される。
1988(昭和63)年 ユネスコ親善大使に任命される。
1989(平成元) 年 東京藝術大学第6代学長に就任。
1996(平成 8) 年 日本美術院理事長に就任。
1998(平成10)年 文化勲章を受章。
2009(平成21)年 79歳で逝去。

1930 Born in Setoda, Ikuchijima Island, Hiroshima
    Prefecture.
1945 As a Shudo Junior High School student he was
    exposed to the atomic bomb explosion in
    Hiroshima City.
1952 Graduated from the Department of Japanese
    Painting of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.
    He became a deputy assistant in the Department of
    Japanese Painting at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts.
    He began studying under the artist Seison Maeda.
1953 He was awarded his first prize at the 38th Inten for
    his work "The Way Home", and entered works in
    the Inten.
1959 He was awarded at the 44th Inten for his work
    "The Transmission of Buddhism".
1962 As the first recipient of a UNESCO fellowship, he
    went to Europe to study.
1964 He was elected as the member of the Japan Art
    Institute.
1988 He was appointed as a Goodwill Ambassador
    to UNESCO.
1989 He was elected the sixth president of Tokyo
    University of the Arts.
1996 Became chairman of the Japan Art Institute.
1998 Presented with the Order of Culture.
2009 Died at the age of 79.
